  • Prime Timers and Gay Aging

How do you navigate through the transitions of social acceptance in a rapidly changing society? Where do you go to find the kind of relationships you want, regardless of your age? With insight, maturity, great guests and a healthy dose of humor, let Jim Duke be your guide through today's gay world.

  • WELCOME!

Prime Timers are older gay or bisexual men (and younger men who admire mature men) who enrich their social lives, engage in diverse activities, and enjoy opportunities and friendships with other Prime Timers throughout the world. Our organization is emerging as a leading force in the gay and bisexual communities with over 80 chapters throughout North America, Europe, and Australia. Look for a chapter near you!

  • WOODY BALDWIN

Prime Timers was founded in 1987 by a retired professor, Woody Baldwin. He felt a wide gap existed in today's society which caters almost exclusively to youth. Woody began the Boston Chapter by placing ads in local newspapers and soliciting his many friends. The attendance at the first meeting indicated to Woody that a need existed for social and cultural organizations to aid and support the aging gay and bisexual man. Now this organization has grown to over 80 chapters worldwide, located throughout North America, Europe and Australia.

  • ENRICHMENT THROUGH DIVERSITY

Our members are men who choose to have their social lives enriched by the diverse activities in which our members engage. Prime Timers are fathers, care givers, businessmen, entrepreneurs, workers, and retirees. One thing is true of all Prime Timers: they enjoy the opportunities and friendships that develop with other Prime Timers throughout the world.

  • REGIONAL EVENTS

Come learn more about Prime Timers, make new friends, and explore different parts of the country and world! Regional events invite members to come together for fun and friendship. Destinations such as Oklahoma City, Las Vegas, and Denver are regular, annual events that are open to all Prime Timers members and friends.

  • TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES

Individual chapters welcome the chance to meet visitors from other chapters. Letters asking for local information and recommendations will be well received and acted upon. Chapters enjoy showing off their communities and having visitors come away with a feeling of kinship and brotherhood with their new-found friends.

  • TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES

Sail the seven seas with fellow Prime Timers members from all around the world! Worldwide and chapter sponsored cruises explore exotic destinations such as Rome, Italy, the Western Caribbean, Miami, Boston, Amsterdam, Munich, the Rhine River, and many more. It is an experience that you will never forget.

  • COMMUNITY

Prime Timers chapters offer a myriad of weekly and monthly activities to suit social interests. Members get together for dinners, potlucks, cards, board games, movies, outdoor adventures, and much more. It is a sense of strong community and supportive brotherhood that highlights each chapter and throughout the organization.

  • WORLDWIDE CONVENTIONS

The Prime Timers Worldwide Convention is held every two years in major cities to allow our members to gather to socialize with other Prime Timers, attend workshops geared towards Prime Timers and to conduct business of the organization. Plans are always underway for the next upcoming convention.

For the June 2006 Prime Times, I wrote a Pride month article titled “Because We Have Endured.” In it, I said that faced with a choice, I would choose to be gay. And then went on to ask several questions.

“So why would I say I would choose to be gay? It seems like such a long and painful journey. We are under assault from the nutso-right wing fringe. We don’t have equal rights.

“And what’s there to be proud of – why do we have festivals and parades, even in the reddest of red states?

Who would have thought while laughing at the antics the characters of Golden Girls, we were seeing a new model of living – shared housing – for the prime time years of our life. The experience of shared housing may not be new to us: perhaps we shared an apartment while in college or when we moved out of our parents’ home. It is likely, however, we have not considered a shared living arrangement for this time of our lives.

Just to be clear: Shared housing is a long-term living arrangement where two – or more – unrelated people choose to live together in a house, apartment, condominium or mobile home.
