For the June 2006 Prime Times, I wrote a Pride month article titled “Because We Have Endured.” In it, I said that faced with a choice, I would choose to be gay. And then went on to ask several questions.
“So why would I say I would choose to be gay? It seems like such a long and painful journey. We are under assault from the nutso-right wing fringe. We don’t have equal rights.
“And what’s there to be proud of – why do we have festivals and parades, even in the reddest of red states?
Who would have thought while laughing at the antics the characters of Golden Girls, we were seeing a new model of living – shared housing – for the prime time years of our life. The experience of shared housing may not be new to us: perhaps we shared an apartment while in college or when we moved out of our parents’ home. It is likely, however, we have not considered a shared living arrangement for this time of our lives.
Just to be clear: Shared housing is a long-term living arrangement where two – or more – unrelated people choose to live together in a house, apartment, condominium or mobile home.
