Atlanta Prime Timers
Welcome to the on-line presence of Atlanta Prime Timers (APT)! We invite you to explore this website for more information on our chapter. Our membership consists nearly 200 men of diverse ages, backgrounds and interests. Men 40 years of age or older are automatically eligible for membership (men under 40 years of age may be admitted when sponsored by another member). Presently, most of our members range in age from 31-95, with an average age of 69.
We come from all walks of life. Many members are retired, although some are still active in their careers. Many involve themselves in their community with volunteerism, politics, gay issues, arts, and entertainment. Some of us are always on the go, and some enjoy the quiet company of others at home. Some members depend on Prime Timers as their primary social outlet, while for others, our activities and events supplement an already busy schedule. Through social, educational and cultural events our goal is to bring men together in a way that encourages the development of meaningful, long lasting friendships. Atlanta Prime Timers began as the third chapter of Prime Timers Worldwide (http://www.primetimersww.com).
Prime Timers Worldwide
Prime Timers was founded in Boston, in 1987, by Woody Baldwin, a retired professor. He discerned a wide social/cultural gap between young and old in a society catering almost exclusively to youth. This worship of eternal youth seemed never more flagrant than in the gay culture of that era. Woody began the Boston Chapter by placing ads in local newspapers and soliciting his many friends. He expected only a small handful of men to attend the first meeting and was surprised when over 40 showed up. This indicated to Woody a need for social and cultural organizations to aid and support the aging gay and bisexual man. Now this organization has grown to over forty chapters worldwide, located throughout North America, Europe and Australia.
The Prime Timers Worldwide Convention is held biennially and attracts thousands of visitors to the host city. Our organization is emerging as a leading force in the gay and bisexual communities, and while we are not a political organization, we are concerned with society as it effects the aging gay and bisexual population. As our organization grows, we will be leading the pack in seeking answers to the needs and problems of maturing gay and bisexual men.
